Answers to common questions about shooting, grading, and the technical design of GATE CAM.
Shooting & Grading Tips
Q. Any tips for getting a cleaner grade?
When shooting in Apple Log, exposing slightly brighter than neutral can help suppress shadow noise. Applying a cinematic LUT during grading from that starting point often gives you a denser, cleaner image with smoother tonal weight.
Q. How can I get more natural motion blur?
We recommend using a physical ND filter, such as ND8 or ND16, on your iPhone lens.
Because iPhone cameras do not have a physical iris, shutter speed can climb too high in bright conditions and make motion look harsh. Reducing light with an ND filter helps keep shutter speed around 1/48 to 1/120 second, which produces a more film-like blur.
Q. What if camera shake is noticeable in Open Gate mode?
Full Open Gate prioritizes the widest possible field of view, so electronic stabilization is off by default. Using a tripod or gimbal gives you the cleanest and widest image.
If you want smoother handheld footage, turn stabilization on in Settings. The tradeoff is a slight crop, but motion will look much steadier.
Q. Where are captured video files saved?
GATE CAM does not lock your media into app-only storage. Captured source files are saved directly to the iOS Photos app, so your original Log footage stays in your own library.
If you want to delete, rotate, or otherwise manage the files themselves, please do that in the iOS Photos app. GATE CAM is designed for shooting, grading, and export rather than media library management.
Q. Can I import videos shot in other apps?
At this time, the app is designed mainly around clips shot with GATE CAM itself. It does not yet support freely importing arbitrary camera roll videos for grading.
If enough people ask for it, we may consider support for footage captured in other apps in the future.
Q. Does grading overwrite the original video?
No. Your source footage stays untouched. GATE CAM treats grading settings and exported results separately, so you can keep the original clip and try multiple looks without destructive edits.
Q. What does the app store locally?
GATE CAM stores per-clip grading settings and some working state locally on your device. The original video files themselves remain managed by your photo library, and file-level operations such as deletion or rotation should be done in the iOS Photos app.
Technical Specifications
Q. What is GATE CAM’s “serious color pipeline”?
It is a custom image-processing engine that uses iOS Metal acceleration to run a cinema-style grading workflow directly on iPhone at high speed.
The goal is to preserve Apple Log’s dynamic range cleanly and turn it into a refined, film-like image without relying on a desktop grading application.
Q. Why separate the BASE LUT from the Creative LUT?
This follows a more robust grading structure.
BASE LUT: converts flat Apple Log footage into a stable reference image, building the correct foundation for contrast, tone, and skin reproduction.
Creative LUT: adds the stylistic layer, such as film-inspired color and texture, on top of that base.
Separating the two makes the result more predictable across different lighting conditions.
Q. Can I switch lenses while recording?
No. Lens selection is only available before recording starts.
GATE CAM accesses a single physical lens path directly to avoid extra digital crop and preserve a cleaner Open Gate image. Think of it more like choosing a prime lens before the shot.
Q. Why can’t I choose 4K in Open Gate mode?
Under the current iOS camera API constraints, recording full-sensor 4:3 together with Apple Log is limited to roughly 1080p-class capture.
GATE CAM prioritizes avoiding OS-level digital crop and preserving the largest useful sensor area instead of chasing a heavier 4K mode.
Q. Why does GATE CAM shoot in 4:3?
GATE CAM is built around using as much of the sensor area as possible while avoiding unnecessary digital crop. In that context, 4:3 is the most natural capture shape for the image the app is trying to make.
It is not only about reframing later. It is also about giving the image a calmer composition, more breathing room, and a more grounded visual presence from the start.
Q. Which devices are supported?
Apple Log capture requires an iPhone Pro model that supports Apple Log. The main supported targets today are iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max and later Pro models.
For the most accurate status, please refer to the app’s device check and the guidance shown in Settings.
Q. Do I need an internet connection?
The main workflow, including shooting, grading, and export, runs directly on your iPhone. The app is not designed around a constant online connection. Some web-based functions, such as support pages and contact forms, do require network access.
Q. Can permissions be changed later?
Yes. Camera, microphone, photos, and location permissions can all be changed later in iOS Settings → GATE CAM. Location remains optional, and the core workflow works without it.
Q. Is Gate Cam + a subscription?
No. Gate Cam + is a one-time upgrade. Once purchased, it can be restored with the same Apple Account.
Q. What is the difference between the free version and Gate Cam +?
The free version includes Apple Log capture and the core grading workflow. Higher-end recording codecs, logo-free export, high-quality export, unlimited preset saving, and external SSD features are part of Gate Cam +.
